Premarital Counseling in Skokie and Evanston, Illinois
You’re engaged. Congratulations. You’ve picked a venue, argued about a guest list, and made roughly four hundred decisions about napkins.
Somewhere in there, one of you thought: we should probably talk about money. And in-laws. And what happens the first time we really disagree — before we’re finding out at eleven at night in a kitchen.
That instinct is a good one. Premarital counseling isn’t a warning sign; it’s the one window where you’re both motivated, both hopeful, and neither of you is defending a position yet. That combination does not come back. Enjoy it while you’ve got it.
And yes, the practice is called Therapy4Dudes. It started as a men’s practice and that’s still most of what I do — which mainly means the person in the room least thrilled about being there tends to settle in faster than either of you expected.
Reasons You Could Benefit from Premarital Counseling in Skokie
- You’ve never really talked about money — debt, accounts, who earns what, what “we can afford it” means to each of you
- You come from very different families and you’re already feeling it around the holidays
- You disagree about kids — whether, when, how many — and keep tabling it
- One of you shuts down in conflict and the other one escalates, and you’ve both noticed
- You’re blending families, or one of you has been married before
- Religion, culture, or your parents are pulling in different directions
- Things are genuinely good and you’d like to keep it that way — which is the best reason there is
You do not need a problem to qualify. Most couples who do this don’t have one.
Premarital Counseling in Evanston Can Help
Here’s the thing nobody says out loud: you’re about to make the largest, longest, least reversible commitment of your life, and you’ve prepared for it less than you prepared for your last job interview.
That’s not carelessness. Nobody offered you any preparation. There’s an entire industry devoted to your flowers and approximately nothing devoted to the part that starts the next morning.
What this does is take the conversations you’d otherwise have by accident — at midnight, mid-argument, four years in — and put them somewhere with time and a person helping you through them.
You get to find out now that you have completely different assumptions about money, while it’s still interesting instead of threatening.
Benefits of Premarital Counseling
Six sessions, in this order:
- Your histories — what each of you learned about marriage from the people who raised you, whether you meant to learn it or not
- Money — accounts, debt, earning differences, spending, and what security means to each of you
- Conflict — how you each fight, how you each retreat, and what happens in the twenty minutes afterward
- Sex and intimacy — expectations, frequency, and the things you’ve both been too polite to mention
- Family and in-laws — holidays, boundaries, and how much access your parents get
- The next five years — kids, career, geography, and where you quietly disagree
[IF CERTIFIED: You’ll both complete the [Prepare/Enrich or SYMBIS] assessment online before we start. It surfaces the gaps faster than six weeks of talking would.]
What you walk out with:
My Approach to Premarital Counseling
Practical, not preachy. I’m not going to hand you a workbook and read it at you, and there’s no unit on love languages.
The package is six 60-minute sessions for $[PACKAGE PRICE], paid at the start. Pace is up to you — most couples go weekly or every other week, and I’ve had couples run the whole thing across three weekends.
In writing before you pay anything: unused sessions are refundable prorated, and you can stop whenever you want.
Start three to six months out. Earlier and the marriage still feels theoretical. Later and you’re doing this in the same weeks you’re finalizing a seating chart, which is not when anyone thinks clearly about in-laws. Already inside eight weeks? Tell me at the consult — [I can sometimes compress it / I run it as a one-day intensive].
This is secular. If faith is central to your marriage we’ll absolutely work with that, but I’m not delivering a curriculum and there’s no denominational requirement.
Premarital work is cash-pay. There’s no diagnosis, so insurance doesn’t cover it — which also means nothing about this ends up in anyone’s medical record.
I see couples on Sundays. It’s the only day I do this work, which turns out to suit engaged couples well, since most of you are already spending your weekends on wedding logistics anyway. This one’s for the marriage.
- My office is in Skokie, Illinois. I also see couples from Evanston, Wilmette, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, and Niles, and from Chicago’s north side — Rogers Park, West Ridge, and Edgewater. Video anywhere in Illinois.
