Dudes with Anxiety

You’re having the same argument you had last month. And the month before that. At this point it’s less an argument than a rerun — you both know your lines, you know where it stalls, you could probably perform it as a two-hander.

Or maybe you’ve stopped arguing altogether and you’re just extremely polite now. Which sounds like progress and isn’t.

Here’s the good news, and I mean this: couples who are still irritated with each other are usually in better shape than they think. Irritation means you’re still expecting something. That’s a lot easier to work with than indifference.

Reasons You Could Benefit from Couples Therapy in Skokie

And a fair number of couples come in because things are fine. Fine is a perfectly good reason. Nobody got married hoping for fine.

Couples Therapy in Evanston Can Help

Worth naming first: most couples therapists are women. It’s just the math of the field. Which means a lot of men walk in braced for a two-on-one and spend the entire hour playing defense instead of saying anything true.

I’m a man. I’ve worked with men my whole career. The practical effect is that the guy in the room stops performing about twenty minutes sooner than he otherwise would, and twenty minutes is most of an hour.

To be clear, that doesn’t mean I’m on his side. If either of you leaves feeling like I’m running the other one’s campaign, tell me and we’ll fix it — that’s me doing the job badly, not an unfortunate side effect.

Now the part most couples don’t have words for.

You love each other. You love the life you’ve built — the house, the kids, the twenty years of it. That’s not in question, and it’s not what’s missing.

What’s missing is that you’ve fallen out of like. The ease is gone. You’ve stopped being curious about how the other one’s day went. You brace a little when they walk in, and neither of you can remember when that started.

Love survives the bad years. It’s sturdier than people give it credit for. Liking each other is what quietly goes — and it’s the part people actually miss.

Benefits of Couples Therapy

Here’s a question I’ll probably ask in the first session: when was the last good week?

Almost every couple has one. Not a perfect one — a week where you laughed at something together, or handled a problem as a team, or one of you did something small that landed. Most couples have written those off as flukes.

They’re not flukes. They’re evidence. You already know how to do this; you’re just not doing it on purpose. A lot of the work is figuring out what was different that week and running it deliberately instead of waiting for it to happen again by accident.

So the goal isn’t becoming new people. It’s this:

That last one is the whole point. Everything above it is scaffolding.

My Approach to Couples Therapy

I’m direct, and I’m going to be more interested in what you want than in whose fault this is. Fault is easy to establish and doesn’t change anything. If you want twelve weeks of taking turns explaining why the other person is the problem, there are cheaper ways to do that at home.

Session one

is ninety minutes with both of you. Mostly one question, in various forms: if this worked, what would be different? Be specific. “Communicate better” isn’t a goal, it’s a horoscope.

Sessions two and three

are individual — one with each of you — so I get the honest version without your partner’s face across the room.

Session four

we come back together and I tell you what I actually see and what I’d propose we do about it.

After that, weekly for a stretch, then further apart as things steady. Most couples are doing real work within [X] sessions. This is not a thing I want you doing forever. My goal is to become unnecessary.

I see couples on Sundays. Whole day, and it’s the only day I do this work.

The most common reason couples therapy fails isn’t the therapy — it’s the calendar. One of you starts taking long lunches, it holds for three weeks, a deadline lands, and the whole thing quietly dies. Nobody ever says “we quit couples therapy.” They just stop rebooking.

Sunday also produces a better session. Neither of you has just walked out of a meeting or has a laptop open in the back of your head. You arrive as people instead of as employees, and the work goes noticeably better for it.

I hold [X] couples slots on Sundays. They fill and they turn over — if the time you want isn’t open, ask me when it will be.

Sessions are $200, at time of service. Couples work generally isn’t covered by insurance, since insurers pay for treating a diagnosed condition in one person and “our marriage is annoying” isn’t in the manual. Paying directly means no diagnosis in anyone’s file and nobody at an insurance company deciding you’re finished.
